The results of Aaron's nut breeding program are exciting and prove that selecting large nuts as seedstock WILL lead to planted trees yielding large nuts. Large nuts have a number of benefits.

  1. Improved economics for harvesting and post harvest handling - this is particularly true where hand harvesting is likely to be practiced.

  2. Increased marketability - large nuts are inherently more marketable than small nuts. As with any crop, bigger is better!

  3. Improved resistance to pests - boring insects in particular find it harder to damage large nuts (as shells are thick).

  4. Increased kernel yields - the kernel to shell ratio is increased with larger nuts.
